TWO men who became trapped inside a retirement home lift after forcing in a double mattress were rescued by firefighters giving a talk in the SAME building.

The "lucky" removal men were rescued from a lift in Chantry Lodge, Andover, shortly before 12noon today.

According to the fire service, the pair became stuck in the lift after forcing in a double mattress, which disrupted the mechanics.

The lift subsequently came to rest two feet below the ground floor level, which prevented the doors from opening.

The two men shouted for help from Andover Fire Station's White Watch team, who were already in the building giving a fire safety talk to residents.

The crew quickly isolated the electrics before using a lift key to get the two men out of the lift.

White Watch's watch commander, Kevin Francis, joked: "We were in the right place at the right time."
