MORE than 7,000 poppies are adorning a window display of a business within the town centre ahead of this year's Remembrance Sunday.

It took two weeks for business owner, Kevin Farrer, and his daughters to create the commemorative display at International Furniture.

The display, which cost Mr Farrer nearly £5,000 to create, includes a bespoke wooden horse covered in poppies, three mannequins dressed in tri-service uniform and a fibre optic LED starscape and poppy field background.

However Mr Farrer says it is not about how much he spent on the exhibit, adding: "The local people support me every week of the year.

"And I just think for two months of the year if I can't give back to the community, there's something wrong.

"It isn't about the money, I want to do it, it's got to be perfect.

"I always do something for Remembrance, have done since owning the shop, and I thought I'd do something completely different this year.

"I try and get better every year, everyone talks about our window."

Mr Farrer comes from a military family as his grandfather was a rear gunner in a Lancaster bomber and both of his brothers are in the army.

He said it is absolutely important for people to support Remembrance Day, saying: "So people don't forget what people went through to get where we are today, we shouldn't forget, it's worth it."

Friend and veteran, Max Barnikel, is a former soldier of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers with the Army Air Corps.

Mr Barnikel, who served for 22 years and is a member of the Royal British Legion and Army Air Corps Association, said: "It's excellent, isn't it?

"His imagination goes beyond, he does think about things a lot and puts them into action.

"But his main thought is to get it going and show it to the people and make sure it isn't forgotten."

Mr Farrer, whose business has been trading for 30 years but based in the town centre for four years, says he tries to finish his creations in time for his birthday.

And he completed his task with one day to go.

He now says he will be able to relax with a spot of fishing before he comes up with an idea for this year's Christmas window display.
