AN ANDOVER pre-school is 'extremely pleased' after they were rated 'good' by Ofsted at a recent inspection.

The Scott Centre Pre-School and Schools Out was rated 'good' the last time an inspector visited four years ago.

Staff were said to be good roles models by an inspector in a report, adding: "They set a positive example to the children and talk calmly and patiently to the children and each other.

"Children demonstrate a good behaviour and an increasing awareness of the needs and feelings of others."

Children were also seen to be 'inquisitive and articulate' who quickly notice changes and ask questions.

Staff encourage healthy eating and good physical exercise, for example children confidently ride scooters, dig in the sand and throw balls.

They are taught to develop independence and take responsibility with activities, including registering themselves on arrival and learning to put on their own coats.

In the report children were said to enjoy solving problems.

It said: "For example, staff encourage the children to think how they can solve the 'traffic jam' on the path.

"Children join in and remember the words and actions to song enthusiastically."

The report added: "They learn about the natural world around them.

"For example, as they discuss the weather and grow peas and carrots in the garden."

The inspector said for the school to further improve the school should further encourage children's knowledge of mathematical language.

The school should also improve the organisation of group activities and the support for staff to adapt and extend them effectively to meet children's different learning needs.

Mark Dixon, Chief Executive at Youth Options, said “We are extremely pleased with the outcome.

"It recognises the continued hard work of the staff team and shines a positive light on what we offer at Youth Options.

"Most pleasingly, the report highlights the very effective partnership we have with parents and the fact that children leave our pre-school with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed at school."
