Detective Chief Inspector Ben Chivers said: “Our investigations into the exact circumstances of what happened in the early hours of this morning are ongoing and residents in Andover will see a lot of police activity in the area today and throughout the weekend.

“We will be carrying out house to house enquiries, as well as undertaking an extensive search of the scene.

“At this stage, we believe there are still people who were in the area or saw what happened that we have yet to speak to, so if this is you, please get in touch.”

Officers surrounded an alleyway running between Spring Meadow Children's Centre and St Paul's Church Centre in Smannell Road.

Passersby looked around with confused and concerned looks on their faces while forensic teams searched the area.

One Rimini Road resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Advertiser: “I came back home about 11am and I saw the officers around the back of my house. I then saw how far the tape stretched and I knew something bad must have happened.

“It’s quite unnerving knowing that something like this has happened right outside where you live.”

Another resident added: “I woke up and came outside my house and there were just officers there. It was the last thing I excepted to see when I walked out of my house.”

One resident who lives in Augustus Walk added: “I saw the flashing lights during the night and it woke me up. I didn’t really think anything off it. But it is so sad to hear what happened.”

Police are still at the scene with investigations ongoing.

Chief Inspector for Andover, Kory Thorne, added: “We understand that this will cause concern for residents but I would like to reassure the community that we will have an increased number of officers in the area as the investigation progresses.

“It is rare for an incident such as this to happen in our town and our neighbourhood officers are working extremely hard with detectives to ensure all lines of enquiry are thoroughly investigated.

“Our teams will be out and about in the town today, so if you have any concerns, or if you think you have information that could help with the investigation, please speak to them.”

The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and police are looking to speak to anyone who was in the area in the early hours of this morning or late last night.

Anyone with any information about the incident can call the police on 101, with the reference 44180135063 or quoting Operation Driver.
