THE town's inaugural mayor’s picnic has been hailed as a success as hundreds turned out for the fun day.

Around 800 people flocked to the event – organised by Andover Rotary Club and Andover Churches Together – in Vigo Recreation Ground on Sunday.

The rain and grey clouds did not dampen visitors’ spirits, with Test Valley mayor Councillor Ian Carr impressed with the occasion.

Throughout the day there was fun for all the family as over 15 charity stalls, a bouncy castle and a fun fair set up on the field.

There was also entertainment from Test Valley Brass, Andover Choral Society and Andover Musical Theatre, to name just a few.

Chris Lynn, one of the event’s organisers, said: “There has been a mayor’s picnic in Romsey for many years and we thought we ought to have one in Andover.

“It was great fun – there were loads of people there - and everything was free which was really nice as you normally have to pay to take the kids out.”

It is in the pipeline for the picnic to become a feature in the town’s event calendar, with talks set to begin on organising the occasion for next year.
