BUCKSKIN residents took a step back in time as they enjoyed a First World War-themed charity event.

The special afternoon, held outside the Ridgeway Community Centre, saw locals dressed in vintage-style clothing, enjoy a relaxed afternoon in the sunshine.

All were encouraged to dress up, and there were plenty of family-friendly activities including a balloon modeller, a raffle, a tombola and more.

Visitors brought their own food and drink to the event, and listened to performances by local musicians.

A representative from the Royal British Legion was also on hand at the event, raising money and answering questions, with a special stand about the work of the organisation.

Dee O’Sullivan said the event was a nice way to get people together following a difficult start to the year, which saw many properties in the area flooded.

She said: “This is only the second event we have had in the centre since all of the flooding. People are still affected and some have not yet been able to get back into their homes. Today is just a fun event for the whole community.

“We raised money for the Royal British Legion and the war theme is very relevant, with the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.”

Gay Gower, chairman of the Buckskin and Worting Community Association, said it is in need of volunteers to help out at the community centre to help host similar events in the future.

She said: “We need people to get involved in the local community, and there are lots of different ways to volunteer.”

The centre needs hospitality volunteers, to meet and greet and make coffees and breakfasts, fundraisers, and helpers and committee members for toddler group and youth club.
