AFTER beating off stiff competition to win one of the sought-after bursaries granted by the Nuffield Research Scheme, BCoT student Tom Ash has just returned from his work placement at Winchester Science Centre (WSC).
Forensic science student Tom, who is now in his second year of the Level 3 programme, secured one of only 20 placements offered by the Nuffield Scheme.
Tom was encouraged by his tutor Jo Bale to apply for the bursary earlier in the year.
Jo explained: “Tom is an exceptionally bright student, and I felt it was important for him to do extra-curricular activities which would push him academically.
“This is the first time that a BCoT student has applied for a bursary and we are delighted Tom was successful. Only 100 bursaries are granted in the south-east so he has done incredibly well.”
Tom’s area of study during his placement was on the interaction of visitors with the exhibits at the WSC. He had to plan, execute, analyse and report on his observational findings.
Following his placement, Tom went on to win a coveted British Science Association Crest Award in recognition of his achievements.
Tom said: “I am so glad Jo encouraged me to apply for the scheme.
“The placement definitely helped me with my coursework. Although it was not directly related to forensics, I gained a great understanding of the science industry.
“I am going to ask if I can do work experience there again this year as part of my course. I’m really hoping there could be a job opportunity at the end of it too.”
