SOUTH Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) is encouraging motorists and pedestrians to be autumn aware by being extra vigilant and cautious when using the roads.

With unpredictable weather including sporadic heavy rainfall and darker days, SCAS is advising motorists and pedestrians to be aware of other road users and changes in driving conditions.

Their advice includes the following tips:

• Motorists should keep appropriate breaking distances between each vehicles, especially if the roads are wet with surface water. Double the gaps to the vehicle in front on wet roads

• Be careful of low autumn sun creating glare on your windscreen which may affect your visibility

• Make sure your vehicle is in good driving condition such as sufficient tyre treads and batteries

• Motorists should ensure their windows and mirrors are clean and that vehicle air vents are used correctly to keep views unobstructed

• Pedestrians should maximise their visibility by wearing fluorescent colours or reflective materials or patches during dusk and night time.

Jon Porter, driving standards manager for SCAS, said: “We know that the autumn can present different driving challenges for motorists and pedestrians alike, and we want everyone to remain safe when using the roads.

“Please plan your journey before setting off and allow extra travel time if the weather is bad. Always allow at least a two second gap with the vehicle in front, and in poor weather and visibility, increase this to a four second gap or more if necessary.

“Both pedestrians and motorists alike need to be more aware at this time of year as the weather conditions deteriorate. Less light combined with wet roads equals more danger and the obvious need for full concentration and consideration for other road users.”
