VICTIMS of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide will be remembered during a wreath-laying service next week.

The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Roger Gardiner, will mark UK Holocaust Memorial Day, at 10am on Tuesday, January 27 at Basingstoke War Memorial.

Cllr Gardiner will lay a wreath on behalf of the borough as will the two interim chief executives of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Laura Taylor and Karen Brimacombe. A bugler will mark the observance of a two-minute silence.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated worldwide since 2000 and is marked on the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau – in 1945.

Cllr Gardiner said: “Holocaust Memorial Day provides us with a specific day to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, honour the survivors and remember the lessons of their experiences.”
