VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with this year’s local Poppy Appeal.

Basingstoke/Overton district of the Royal British Legion is calling on the public to support the appeal, which runs from October 24 to November 7.

This year’s appeal is particularly important as it is during the centenary of the First World War; the RBL hopes everyone will offer support by wearing a poppy in memory of the fallen.

A century on from the start of that conflict, the charity is still helping today’s armed forces families in much the same way, whether coping with bereavement, living with disability or finding employment.

The poppy is worn as a symbol to commemorate the sacrifices of the forces and to show support to those serving today and their loved ones.

Money raised through the appeal goes directly to the RBL’s welfare work, providing through-life care to anyone who currently serves in the British armed forces, who has previously served, and their families.

Bill Sample, the Poppy Appeal organiser for Basingstoke/Overton district RBL, said extra help is needed this year to sell poppies in Basingstoke because many volunteers have had to give up their support.

He is also appealing to businesses that run charity schemes for which employees can volunteer their time to local charities to consider offering their support to the Poppy Appeal.
