A NEW betting shop could open at the Top of The Town after an application was submitted to the borough council.

William Hill has applied to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to open a shop at 25-27 Winchester Street in the ground floor of a former nightclub.

The premises has been empty since nightclub Stardust closed down weeks after opening in June 2013.

Prior to this it was occupied by Zeus for four months.

There are already five other betting shops and one adult gaming centre operating within 500metres of the proposed location.

As previously reported in The Gazette, William Hill's application to change the use of the premises into a betting shop was rejected by the council's Development Control committee in August this year.

As part of the plans, the upper part of the building would have been retained as a "drinking establishment".

The plans were refused because they went against the local authority's vision for the Top of The Town.

The new application will be considered by the council's licensing sub-committee on December 2.
