A GRANDFATHER had to be freed from his home – after he was impaled on a metal door handle.

Fire fighters were called to help paramedics to the man’s home in Dewpond Road in Lychpit after his arm was impaled on the flat door handle.

Watch manager Nick Windsor said the man was playing games with his grandson when he brushed past the door and got his arm caught on it.

He said: “It went between the skin and the muscle. We used a junior hacksaw to cut off the handle.

“The man kept very calm and did fantastically well.”

After he was freed he was treated by paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service.

Mr Windsor added: “You could have done that 1,000 times and that wouldn’t have happened.”

He added that the family seemed to be a very pragmatic family.

“I think it’s to be commended as to how calm the man managed to stay. He could have been panicking and he wasn’t.”
