MOTORISTS in north Hampshire are warned to be wary after reports of a man offering gold for cash.

Officers from Hampshire police are urging people to ignore any offers from a man at Tot Hill Services who claims his credit card is not working.

It comes after a woman was flagged down at the service station on the A34 southbound who offered her gold for cash at about 1pm on Monday November 16.

A spokesman from Hampshire police said: “Previous scams that have been investigated have seen highly polished copper made to look like gold, which has then been offered in return for cash.”

The man is described as of Middle Eastern origin, in his 30s and spoke German and English.

He was 5ft 4ins, of a chubby build and wore a red chequered shirt and a brown jacket.

His car was described as dark blue. Three other men were seen inside.

Anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously in this way at the roadside, is urged to call police immediately.

If possible, take down the registration number of the vehicle.

The spokesman added: “If you suspect someone’s request for help isn’t genuine, don’t be afraid to refuse, especially if you think that person is trying to scam you, and call police immediately.

“If you have been a victim and haven’t yet come forward, please contact the police as soon as possible because you may be able to help with our enquiries and trace the people doing this.”
