THE CBI is calling on reform of the EU now that MEPs have voted by a comfortable majority in support of the new European Commission.

The commission is set to start work on November 1, led by newly elected president Jean-Claude Juncker who replaces Jose Manuel Barroso.

CBI deputy director general Katja Hall, said: “With a new commission now in place it is finally time to start delivering on the promises of EU leaders to genuinely reform the EU.

“We all want a Europe that is creating more jobs for its young people and setting the foundations to keep competing with the rest of the world.

“The commission should be extending the single market, getting an EU-US trade deal over the line and pulling back where the EU does not add value and can be better decided at national level.

“Business is looking for Lord Hill to use his key role at Europe’s top table to push for those reforms that will create growth, jobs and prosperity across the continent.”

Lord Hill is the EU commissioner for financial services.
