CONNECT, share, develop and enjoy – that is the mantra for a new “meet-up” event called Basingstoke Biz Buzz.

Organised by creative agency The Hive, the first meeting was held at The Ark Conference Centre last week.

Ian Howe, chief executive and co-founder of The Hive, said: “The objective is to build a strong and interactive community for businesses and creative people alike.

“We plan to provide regular happenings where businesses can present their ideas and creative talents can promote their skills.

“We want to bring the energy of meet-ups, that are happening in the coolest areas of London, to encourage entrepreneurs locally to engage and develop.

“We will try to bring new topics that are hot to our meet-ups, but will also be guided by our members.”

During the presentation part of meeting, which was preceded and followed by networking opportunities, Ian spoke about the fundraising journey of The Hive, which he set up with James Brady three years ago.

Ian said: “Funding is an integral part of growing a business, and there is often some rather awkward traps to avoid. We’ve certainly been on a journey that has featured positives and negatives.”

Next up was Geoff Roy, of Leapfrog Internet Marketing, who discussed website optimisation.

Talented photographer Nathan Dundovic then showcased some of his stunning photographs and talked of how he has been able to develop two businesss – Tight Threads Apparel and Ember Club.

Martin Carruthers, from Grant Thornton, who is an Access to Finance Growth Manager of the GrowthAccelerator Programme, spoke about the funding landscape.

The Hive co-founder and creative director James Brady finished off the round of presentations, talking about a new app he is developing.

During the evening, those attending were able to admire artwork by Lee ‘Nzie’ Baker, from Idel Cans, who is also involved with the All Of Our Own Work Gallery, in Festival Place, Basingstoke, and listened to background musician local session guitarist and composer Iain Kerr.

The next Basingstoke Biz Buzz meeting is set to take place in mid January.
