THEY are raring to take to the road for the city’s biggest mass running event in a generation.

The DP World terminal at Southampton docks has already clinched the title as Britain’s fastest for moving containers on and off huge ships arriving in the city.

Now the self-styled Container Crowd are embarking on the fresh challenge to become the quickest company to complete the ABP Southampton Half Marathon.

The Container Crowd will have 28 members hot out of the blocks at the 13.1-mile race and sister 10-kilometre route on Sunday.

They are raising funds for a variety of charities, including Mission to Seafarers, helping merchant seafarers across the globe.

Straddle carrier driver Steven Andrews is running on behalf of Action for ME following his wife Liz being diagnosed with the condition five years ago.

He said: “I've been so surprised by everyone's generosity. Friends, family and the team at DP World Southampton have all donated.”

A series of rolling road closures are in place during the race, which starts in Hoglands Park and climaxes in the Guildhall Square in front of cheering crowds.
