A HAMPSHIRE firm, which makes escape system valves for submarines, has two reasons to celebrate.
Advanced Marine Innovation Technology Subsea is 10 years old and, as the perfect birthday gift, it’s landed a lucrative contract to provide new-generation valves for retro-fitting to the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Walrus class subs.
AMITS is one of three partners in a consortium which has been working on the escape system for more than six years.
The Gosport firm provides the control valves, German sub builder, HDW, adapts the vessels for installation and the escape suits themselves are made by RFD Beaufort, in Birkenhead.
The system has been extensively tested, not only in the Submarine Escape Simulator at QinetiQ’s Alverstoke premises and the Royal Navy Submarine Escape Training Tank at Gosport, but also in Sweden.
“The project represents the culmination of nine years of R&D effort by the company and this contract provides a significant export order for the UK and will bring work into the area.”,” said a spokesman for the firm.
