AN EVENT billed as a potential life saver for businesses in what is one of the toughest economic climates in years takes place in Basingstoke next week.

BE INSPIRED is a free one-day business-mentoring, learning and networking event to be held at the Belvedere House office block on Basing View, on Thursday, April 19.

Registration starts at 9.30am before the busy day is officially opened by Nick Hewer (pictured right) – Lord Sugar’s right hand man from the hit BBC1 show The Apprentice.

Nick, who is also the new host of Channel 4’s Countdown, said he is looking forward to topping the bill as special guest speaker.

His appearance is being sponsored by Phillips Solicitors and his opening speech will be followed by a presentation by a director of the Basingstoke law firm Jonathan Pender, called A Survivor’s Guide to Successful Business in Basingstoke.

Other speakers include Geoff French, chairman of Enterprise M3, who will be talking about the role of the LEP, while Students in Business will be the theme discussed by Centerprise chairman Rafi Razzak.

During the event the INSPIRE12 Business Awards will also be launched.

In addition to Phillips, BE INSPIRED, is sponsored by Enterprise M3, Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, with The Gazette as a media partner, and is being organised by Destination Basingstoke.

The not-for-profit company’s managing director Felicity Edwards said: “I would urge business owners and those thinking of setting up in business to register to attend this free event. There are a wide range of seminars offering support and advice.”

Among those offering advice is a team from HMRC and local business leaders such as Adrian Leach from HCR.

He will be talking about trading overseas, while business coach Dave Gammon will be discussing how to punch through the business growth ceiling.

Mike Loftus from RSM Tenon will discuss The Gazette-backed Local Business Accelerators competition, and Nick Guerney Sharpe will offer his advice on raising capital from venture capitalists.

The range of advice being offered could be invaluable to many entrepreneurs attending the event according to Felicity, since 95 per cent of new businesses fail within five years.
