PENSIONERS are fighting to stop the curtain falling on their much-loved cinema outings that have become a lifeline for many.

Since the Vue Cinema opened in Eastleigh earlier this year, more and more pensioners have been taking advantage of the weekly Senior Club, which offers tea and biscuits.

But to their horror they were told by staff that these screenings face the axe if numbers do not increase by next week, forcing Carol Bennett and her friends to take action.

With just a week left they are on a mission to tell as many pensioners as possible that this service is available and are urging Daily Echo readers to join them for the Tuesday screening to help save it from extinction.

They hope that their determination to save the Senior Club will prove to cinema bosses that there is a demand for it and stop them giving it the chop.

For some it is the only reason to venture out of their homes and avoid the isolation so many are left facing when there is nothing to do.

Many have come to rely on the friendships forged at the discounted screenings, often heading out for lunch afterwards, while others enjoy the chance to see the latest blockbuster movie with a nice cuppa in hand.

With winter approaching, many fear that the cinema is taking away one of the only activities they can enjoy and afford.

Carol, 62, from Charden Road, Bishopstoke, said: “We would all be devastated if it was to go because there is very little else in Eastleigh for pensioners to enjoy and to take it away after such a short amount of time is cruel.”

Justin Walker, manager of Vue Eastleigh, said that the company was committed to keeping the club going and had reduced ticket prices for the club – but dwindling numbers had prompted a review.

He said: “Over the next few weeks we’ll be making great efforts to encourage an increased take-up of the Senior Club. A final decision will then be made on its future in Eastleigh after October 13.

“We really do hope that the local community will help to support the Senior Club by coming along, so that we can continue with it. In addition, we’re always looking to add extra value for our senior customers, which is why they can save an extra 25 per cent off the price of a ticket, weekdays before 5pm.”
