WINCHESTER University researchers are testing the success of a scheme to tackle underage drinking.

They are evaluating the impact of a project in Eastleigh which could be rolled out nationwide to help target the problem.

The Start Tackling Alcohol Responsibly (STAR) project has been running for over two years and aims to reduce consumption of alcohol by children aged eight-14 years in Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and Horton Heath.

Dr Gary Jones, lecturer in applied social studies said: "This is an exciting opportunity for the university to carry out research into a highly political and contemporary social issue.

"Both central and local government are committed to tackling the culture of underage drinking in the UK and I am delighted to be working closely with such progressive colleagues at Eastleigh Borough Council."

Research involves the use of postal surveys to young people and parents, as well as focus groups with project leaders.

Mary Amos, health and community manager at Eastleigh Borough Council, said: "We are committed to working in partnership with others to tackle the important issue of underage drinking.

"Underage drinking in Eastleigh is no worse than the national average," she added, "However the University's evaluation of the STAR project will be essential in helping us and others to learn from experience about what works and how we can further improve our services to better tackle this issue in the future."

The final report is due by spring 2010.
