PLANS for a pioneering new school in Winchester city to tackle a shortage of places have been unveiled by county chiefs.
The county council has identified a potential site for a two-form entry primary on the site of Rotherly boarding house at The Westgate School.
The idea is The Westgate — currently a secondary — would become a school for pupils aged four to 16, making it the first county-run combined primary and secondary school in Hampshire.
The council said a separate proposal to close the girls’ boarding house at Rotherly — which also houses a nursery school — had created the opportunity to site a primary there.
If it gets the go-ahead, the new school would open its doors to the first reception pupils in September 2014. The council is preparing to launch a public consultation on the proposals next month.
