Diesel spill causes skid chaos
10:26am Thursday 12th September 2013 in News
A DIESEL spillage left a trail of havoc through Romsey this morning (Thursday September 12).
Cars collided with each other and motorcyclists and cyclists ended up coming off their machines other over a two-and-a-half mile stretch between Greatbridge and Ashfield Roundabout.
Police were inundated with calls from the public from 7.15am and people were still reporting problems nearly two hours later.
Hampshire highways crews were called out to put sand on the affected roads which included the A3057 between the Dukes Head pub and the Plaza Roundabout in Romsey and Southampton Road (A27) between the town and the Ashfield Roundabout.
A police spokesperson said: “We had numerous reports of minor collisions and people coming off their bikes and motorbikes. People were sliding all over the place with vehicles hitting each other.
"There were reports of large amount of diesel on the road and it was very dangerous for people using the road. As far as we can tell, despite the chaos there were no injuries.
Police say they received reports that the diesel came from a blue car, make or model unknown, spotted in the Greatbridge area.
