One hundred and fifty Girlguides showcased their talents for song, dance and drama in Romsey Abbey at the weekend as a congregation of more than 500 packed the historic building to be part of a Christmas by Candlelight service.

Hampshire Girlguiding's “Show Time” team co-ordinated the third annual service, giving many of cast members chance to build their confidence and experience of performing to a large audience.

A 20-strong leaders choir led the congregation in song as well as performing their own versions of Away in a Manger and O, Little town of Bethlehem.

The girls aged seven to 26 and from the Brownie, Guide and Senior Section, used the full length of the abbey to reach out and include the audience in their song and dance performances while twinkling ice drop lights set the seasonal scene.

Rainbows, the youngest section, from Netley Marsh, Testwood, Calmore and Copythorne performed a traditional nativity play with the addition of a camel who accompanied the three kings down the aisle.

The flame from a single candle spread its light throughout the congregation as they sang ' In the bleak midwinter ' ending the service on the chilly evening.

Liz Gant, Brown Owl and ShowTime director, said: "Show Time is a Girlguiding show bringing girls together from districts across the county and giving them the opportunity to perform on stage.

"It's an opportunity some may never have had, creating memories for years to come and life long friends through taking part ".
