After Test Valley Borough Council withdrew its support for Romsey’s Christmas lights, the town council has taken on the responsibility and its members are determined that it will continue to be an annual event.

The lights provide a focal point for the many activities and bring in visitors.

However, this year the town council announced that it would have to reduce funding for the festive display as it sought to find savings after being landed with a £130,000 repair bill for the Town Hall roof and heating system.

Councillors Dorothy Baverstock and Karen Dunleavey, who both represent the Cupernham ward on the borough council, have donated £1,000 from their ward grant.

“We all benefit in Romsey from a cheery town centre and Christmas would not be the same without them,” said Cllr Baverstock.

Cllr Dunleavey added: “We will continue to work with residents to make sure this continues to happen.”
