ROMSEY’S War Horse Memorial project continues to gallop towards the finish line.
Officials behind the £70,000 project to erect a life-size bronze resin statue of a horse and trooper in Romsey War Memorial Park to remember the horses and mules that trained for battle in the Great War on the outskirts of the town are behind a fundraiser at Sherfield English on April 12. St Edwards School in the village will throw open its doors to the public for an exhibition of First World War artefacts and memorabilia between 10am and 5pm.
The private school in Melchet Park off the A27 Romsey to Whiteparish road has a large collection of relics including a rare gas mortar bomb which is one of only a tiny number left in the world.
It has a firing range of 1,500 metres and was in use on the battlefield in the Great War and in the early years of the Second World War.
