The Rotary Club of Romsey Test asked the public to roll up their sleeves on Saturday and it could have been a lifesaver for some.

Club members, in association with the Stroke Association, were in the Cornmarket to provide free blood pressure checks to passers-by as part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness about strokes.

One hundred and ten people underwent checks with two teams of NHS staff and Ambulance Service paramedics.

Sixteen of those tested were recommended to seek an urgent follow up with their GP as soon as possible and another 28 were recommended to make an appointment to see their doctor for a further test within the next month. Members of the Open Gate Stroke club were on hand to raise awareness on the symptoms of strokes.

Rotary member Stuart Wineberg, who organised the event, and Rotary President Gren Lamb-Hughes said they were pleased with the success of the day.

The event also marked the start of the club’s “Tell Us Your Wish” campaign which gives the public a chance to name local individuals and organisations they think Rotary should support.
