ORGANISERS of one of Romsey’s biggest events are calling on businesses and community groups in the town to take part again this year.

As the Romsey Carnival looks to celebrate its 60th year bringing people across the town together, organisers said they would like to see some of those who were there in its first year come back.

Pete Lomer, carnival committee member said that while there has been an increase in the number of entrants in the summer procession there was more than 50 vehicles and 30 walkers in 1956.

This year’s procession is on Sunday July 17 starting from Greatbridge Industrial Estate at 3pm.

The winners of each class will receive a cash prize, sponsored by Wheelers Travel and the “overall best” in procession will receive the Smith Bradbeer Trophy and a cash prize.

Pete Lomer said: “Each year, the committee hears comments about how short the procession is. If those who commented took part either individually or as part of their “street”, group or business there would not be a need to make such comments.

“With all the new housing developments in and around Romsey and new people to Romsey, it should be no problem in getting to know the residents and enjoying an afternoon out.

“The Committee can only arrange for the event to take place, it is up to the clubs, businesses, organisations and individuals to take part.”

He added: “Although a lot of the business entrants have since long gone, there are still a number of businesses, clubs and organisations that are still going and could take part now.

“These are British Legion Men’s and Women’s sections, Smith Bradbeer & Co, Romsey Young Farmers, Romsey Round Table, Rotary Club of Romsey, Romsey Over 60’s Club now Age Concern Club, Romsey Boy Scouts, Romsey Townswomen’s Guild, Romsey Comrades Club, R.A.O.D.S. and Romsey Abbey Young Wives.”

Pete added that the committee wanted to thank George Harris of Harris Transport for making four lorries available for use by entrants.
