TO CELEBRATE her first year as patron of the Romsey and District Branch of the RNLI, Lady Brabourne paid a visit to the Lifeboat Headquarters in Poole.

During her visit, the patron took part in a demonstration rescue using the lifeboat simulator, saw the sea safety pool recreating storm force conditions, and the new boat building centre where six of the latest Shannon class lifeboats were under construction.

The highlight of the day was when Lady Brabourne went aboard The Earl and Countess Mountbatten of Burma lifeboat, named after her grandparents-in-law, and which was funded through the Mountbatten Lifeboat Appeal, started by the Romsey and District Branch in 1979.

Broadlands, the historic home of the Mountbatten family and now that of Lady Brabourne, has a long-held connection with the sea and with the RNLI.

“The RNLI headquarters in Poole is as impressive as the work done by each and every lifeboat and crew that put to sea when an emergency arises,” said Lady Brabourne.

“Everyone who supports the RNLI in whatever way, sustains that dedication.

“I’m honoured to be involved in part of our proud history as a seafaring nation by serving as Patron of the Romsey & District RNLI.”

Mr Chris Green, chairman of Romsey RNLI, added: “The local branch is greatly honoured to have the continuing support of our fundraising by Lady Brabourne. Her genuine interest in our work is appreciated by all our helpers and we hope the association will continue for many years.”
