A ROMSEY man has been bombarded with thousands of electricity bills all addressed the wrong person because of a power company blunder.

The frustrated householder has received up to 30 wrong bills every night for the last 18 months.

They have been sent by utility company Scottish Power and some even threaten action from debt collectors.

Now he has the backing of Romsey MP Caroline Nokes, who is calling on the power firm to end her constituent’s misery.

She says she is worried many residents, who the bills were meant for, could face action against them.

Last night the firm apologised and promised to sort out the mix up.

It is believed to have started when the resident moved into his newly built Romsey flat, owned by Sovereign Housing Association.

While setting up an account with Scottish Power in August 2015 his address, being so new, was not recognised and it had to be created. But something went wrong.

His address, he says, was mistakenly listed as the headquarters for Sovereign Housing and he began to receive hundreds upon hundreds of bills, addressed to Mr Sovereign and Mr Sovereign Housing.

And despite returning scores of the letters and contacting Scottish Power, more kept arriving, some meant for customers as far as Didcot and Swindon.

“The postman must have hated me,” he said.

“Some evenings I would get home to 30 or 40 bills; it was just so exasperating and I felt like I was getting harassed and bombarded.

“To start with I sent the first hundred back and when I contacted Scottish Power nothing happened.

“Every time I phoned up I was just telling the same story over and over again to a different person; no-one would take me seriously.”

Having got nowhere by contacting the utility company, he decided to get in touch with an ombudsman. Then, in January this year, the issue was finally resolved.

MP Mrs Nokes is now calling on locals who haven’t received their bills to contact the utility company as soon as possible.

She added: “Sovereign Housing and Scottish Power now need to meet to resolve this issue so it doesn’t happen again. My concern is that I have constituents that may not have realised they are not receiving bills and could soon have debt collectors at their doors.”

A spokeswoman from Sovereign Housing confirmed the incident was not a mistake on its part, but added: “We are aware of this issue which we understand from our resident has now been resolved. However, if any of our residents are concerned that they may have been affected, they can get in touch with us on 0800 5872325.”

A Scottish Power spokesperson added: “We sincerely apologise to the customer concerned.

“Our system has been updated to remove any further letters going to this customer’s address. All other accounts will now be going to the correct address. If a customer has any concerns we would ask them to contact us.”
