RMT members on London Underground have voted to strike next Wednesday over the future safety of the Tube network with the advent of the pubic private partnerships (PPP).
Members voted eight to one for the strike, which will take place at 8pm on Wednesday and run through until the same time on Thursday and the union is not ruling out any further strikes.
Bob Crow, RMT general secretary, said: "Our members have every right to protect their own and the public's safety. This overwhelming vote is an indictment of London Underground's refusal to enter into meaningful consultation with our safety reps.
"When lives are at stake there can be no room for compromise and the experience of the national railway proves that splitting up the Tube network in the same way is potentially disastrous."
But fellow union the Transport and Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA), which has 3,500 members, condemned the 24 hour strike as serving "no purpose" and is not in the interest of Londoners.
