WINCHESTER pupils were recently given a glimpse into the world of wildlife television. Wildlife film director/producer Alastair Fothergill visited St Swithun’s School to give a talk on his career.
Mr Fothergill has produced some of the BBC’s most memorable wildlife programmes including The Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet, all presented by Sir David Attenborough.
Students were fascinated to hear behind-the-scenes details of these productions and the difficulties in capturing creatures like polar bears and penguins on camera.
Mr Fothergill also revealed only one in 200 images filmed are used in the final piece and that his own career was launched by winning a university film competition, which led to a job on the BBC’s The Really Wild Show.
Year 8 pupils Flora Toyne-Sewell, said: “It was fascinating to hear about how film crews deal with such climate extremes and to understand more about the technical aspects behind the making of such amazing images.”
It was part of the school’s academic enrichment programme which involves regular lectures from guest speakers.
