Retired teachers from Winchester making a difference in Africa
1:00pm Monday 18th March 2013 in Winchester
Seven teachers have recently returned from Uganda, where they trained headteachers, visited schools in support of the slates and chalk programme run by the charity Education Uganda, and promoted twinning with Hampshire schools.
Charity secretary, John Wilkinson, said: "Living and working in this beautiful area is always challenging, but seeing success grow in so many schools is reward in itself."
Mr Wilkinson is also chairman of Winchester Rotary's International Committee, which has working links with the Rotary Club of Kasese, providing books and libraries to primary schools in the district.
The two clubs are now bidding for a global grant from Rotary International to provide books for another 30 Ugandan schools.
“This is a very exciting development and one which will help to raise standards in their schools. The new partnership between the two clubs expresses the international friendship and 'service above self' ideals of Rotary in a very practical way," Mr Wilkinson said.
