Winchester housing group given green light to build 18 new homes
A HOUSING group has been given the green light for 18 new homes in the centre of Winchester.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) own the land at Erskine Road, but housing group A2Dominion had an option to purchase it, subject to planning permission.
That permission was granted on August 12, and with only one letter of objection, the matter did not need to come before the planning committee.
The decision should bring to an end years of bitter wrangling between residents, the MOD and A2, over who was responsible for maintaining the site.
In June last year, Winchester and Chandler’s Ford MP Steve Brine intervened, formally requesting that the MOD cut the grass there after residents said children could no longer play in it, as drug addicts were using the long grass as cover.
Cllr Ian Tait, former portfolio holder for new homes delivery, welcomed the news.
He said: “The planning application has taken forever but we have ended up with 18 affordable homes and enhanced play areas for children.
“If I was a parent there, I would be thinking ‘ok, we’ll lose some open space, but at least it will be a better area for the children to play in’.”
Erskine Road is a stone’s throw from the University of Winchester on Sparkford Road, and the surrounding streets have also been the subject of parking disputes between students and residents.
Mr Tait believes development will go some way towards alleviating those problems.
“A2 are going to address parking concerns, so they have taken onboard the problems and will use it the space more intelligently. They will formalise parking provision on Erskine Road, which should mean the problems with students parking there will come to an end,” he said.
The redevelopment will provide 18 affordable dwellings consisting of nine two-bedroom and nine three-bedroom properties, with accompanying parking, landscaping and a play area.
