Winchester auctioneers sell rare high-priced Japanese vase
AUCTIONEERS in Winchester have sold one of their single most expensive small items to date.
Pump House Auctions on Wickham Road near Swanmore sold a late 19th century Japanese vase, standing at approximately six inches high, for £750.
The hand-painted Satsuma porcelain, depicting a wild fowl on a blue ground, exceeded its original estimate of £150-200 becoming the Pump House’s highest-priced single item for its size, according to office manager Emma Cole.
Ms Cole said: “This vase created a lot of interest, so many it’s hard to put a number on it. We had more than 30 emails enquiring and there are some serious collectors involved here.”
Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in the late 16th century and is still produced today.
