THE combined voices of Southampton and Winchester university students will perform carols this Saturday.

Accompanied by Southampton University Sinfonietta, its chamber orchestra, the young musicians will perform at the United Church, Jewry Street, Winchester.

This is the first performance combining singers from both universities and the first Christmas concert by the sinfonietta.

It is also the first time that the orchestra will have performed in Winchester.

The concert includes works by Holst, Darke, Vaughn-Williams, and Rutter, as well as classic Christmas carols for the audience to sing.

The University of Winchester students will be participating through the musical routes extension programme run by Foundation music, the extra-curricular music department.

The concert will raise funds for the orchestra, and also collecting for Cancer Research UK.

Alex Fryer, assistant music director of the Sinfonietta, said: “We are really looking forward to combining the forces of the two universities in the spirit of Christmas peace.

“The students will sing together and we hope to bring some festive cheer to Winchester”.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets available on the door or reserve be e-mailing eb5g11@soton.ac.uk. Students £5, Concessions £7, Adults £10.
