A MAIN road near Winchester was closed this afternoon after a serious crash on the A272.

Both ways are blocked due to a motorbike colliding with the back of a car, according to a South Central Ambulance Service spokesman, near the Preshaw turning at Gander Down, east of Cheesefoot Head.

The accident happened at about 2.45pm, between the A31 at Chilcomb and New Cheriton.

The police were warning that the road was likely to remain blocked into this evening.

Hampshire Air Ambulance was activated and had landed in a field by the road, said an eye-witness.

A male, thought to be the motorcyclist, was taken by road to Southampton General Hospital in a serious condition.

Ironically, the A272 reopened yesterday after being closed at Bramdean for nearly a month due to flooding.
