THEY came, they saw, they brought lots of cakes.

Hundreds of people supported the Winchester Colossal Cake Sale on Saturday and raised a four-figure sum for Help for Heroes. The event, now in its sixth year has spread out from the Brooks Centre to St Maurice’s Covert and now with a presence at the Buttercross.

People from across the county baked cakes and donate them to the organisers for sale to the public.

Organiser Sarah Walker said around 2,000 cakes had been sold, a similar figure to last year.

She said: “It was a wonderful team effort. Yet again people have been fantastic. I would like to thank everyone for helping us to help our heroes.”

The amount raised was being counted this week.

The cake sale was started in 2008 by Anne Ponsonby and has now grown to a national event.
