Romsey Advertiser: Stephen Robbins now has his Advanced Seamanship qualification Stephen Robbins now has his Advanced Seamanship qualification

A WINCHESTER teenager has been putting his sea legs to the test and now has been awarded a maritime qualification.

Stephen Robbins, 16, joined the Sea Cadets’ Winchester Unit when he was 13 and has since been tested on his knowledge of rope work, rigging, splicing and whipping, canvas work and decorative rope work.

He has now been awarded the Advanced Seamanship qualification, which last year only 13 cadets out of 14,000 completed.

The leading cadet said: “During my time at Sea Cadets I have really enjoyed meeting new people and learning new skills.

"I also enjoy seamanship, rowing and adventure training, especially sailing offshore on the Sea Cadets flagship TS Royalist.”

He added: “I have gained many qualifications as a Sea Cadet and I would recommend it for anyone wanting to experience fun and adventure!”

His achievement is part of a new national partnership with Carnival and Sea Cadets, which offers people aged ten and 18 the opportunity to expand their maritime skills.
