WINCHESTER city councillors are set to approve controversial plans to build homes on a city estate.

The city council is set to give itself approval for 12 homes on the site of 22 garages and open space behind houses in Westman Road, Weeke.

The planning committee meets on Thursday morning.

There has been a petition with 240 signatures and 39 letters of objection, citing over-development and the loss of play space.

Also objecting has been the City of Winchester Trust concerned at the loss of open recreation space and the “disappointing” design of the dwellings.

The committee is also poised to agree the building of 21 council homes on the site of the New Queens Head on Stanmore Lane.

The pub has been demolished and there are no objections. One letter has been sent, concerned that the tree belt around the site will be retained.
