THE work of a medieval historian at Winchester University is to be celebrated at a conference organised by her former students.

Barbara Yorke, Emeritus professor in early medieval history, will be joined by colleagues and friends at the Lives and Landscapes of Early Medieval Wessex conference this month.

Speakers include Oxford professor Martin Biddle, an expert in early medieval Winchester, and Dame Janet Nelson, of Kings College London, who will discuss the work of eighth-century scholar Alcuin.

Professor Yorke has lectured at the university since 1977. She retired in 2012 but continues to work on projects including the search for King Alfred the Great.

Two of her former research students, Ryan Lavelle and Alex Langlands, organised the conference.

Dr Langlands said: “The University of Winchester is the natural home for the study of Wessex in the Anglo-Saxon period and Barbara Yorke remains a leading light in the study of early medieval history.

“I am very much looking forward to what will be an incredibly stimulating day.”

The conference takes place on Saturday, September 27 from 9am to 5pm at The Stripe, King Alfred Campus, Sparkford Road.

Tickets cost £25 or £22 for students and can be bought at winchester.ac.uk/store.
