IT may not have the busiest nightlife in the south, but Winchester has been recognised as one of the safest.
The city has been awarded Purple Flag status for offering its five million annual visitors an entertaining and safe night out for four years.
Led by the Association of Town Centre Management, the national scheme recognises towns or cities that manage their night-time experience and overcome negativity.
Cllr Robert Humby, leader of Winchester City Council, said: “We have a fantastic city centre offering a whole host of activities and entertainment in the evening. Purple Flag proves to our residents and visitors just how safe and inviting the city centre is.”
The recognition is part of Purple Flag week from September 22-30.
