WORKS to improve parking at the county’s first ‘super school’ will start next week.

It will create extra spaces for pick-up and drop-off of children for The Westgate School, in Winchester, and is hoped to resolve traffic congestion.

It comes after a schoolboy was knocked down in Cheriton Road after school earlier this month.

The existing school bus stop in Cheriton Road will be relocated to Chilbolton Avenue, where the carriageway will be narrowed.

New parking bays will be created adjacent to the school field and the footway beside the pedestrian crossing will be widened.

Cllr Sean Woodward, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for economy, transport and environment, said: “This scheme has been developed in consultation with our colleagues in Children’s Services and with consideration being given to the needs of local residents. They will represent a safety improvement for children and local residents alike.

“The works on the highway have been timed to begin during the half-term holiday so that critical line marking adjustments, installation of a new crossing build-out/speed calming feature in Cheriton Road can be completed. Drainage works on Chilbolton Avenue will also be carried out while there is less traffic on the roads.”

The lower school opened its doors to 60 Year R pupils in September, and will fill up over the next six years to form a 420-place primary school on the site of the existing secondary school.

The work will take five weeks, starting on Monday, October 27.
