ONE of Hampshire's main galleries has been boosted by a five-figure government grant.

New lighting worth £25,000 is to be installed in the Winchester Discovery Centre in Jewry Street.

The new LED system, to be installed later this year, will allow visitors to see the objects much better and protect the world-class objects on show by emitting less heat.

Janet Owen, chief executive of Hampshire Cultural Trust, said: “In order to bring world-class culture to Hampshire we need to have the right environment to display it in. This latest funding boost will allow us to do just that and hopefully attract even more world-class touring exhibitions and loans from national collections.”

Winchester Discovery Centre is one of 25 venues across the UK to benefit from such a grant. Jointly funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Wolfson Foundation, the £3m pot is designed to fund renovation and improvement projects in museums and galleries, to increase access and enhance the display of exhibits.

The £7m centre opened in 2007.
