POLICE are hunting two men who assaulted a group of Winchester students in an attempted mugging.

An 18-year-old woman and her male companion were punched after they refused to hand over valuables on their way back from the city centre in the early hours of Saturday.

A third victim was also threatened when approached in Peninsula Road, near Winchester University, at 12.30am.

The group was chased but escaped unharmed. Nothing was taken and no medical attention was required.

The suspects are described as white, in their late teens, with dark hair and hooded tops pulled up.

One man had the bottom part of his face covered with a scarf and the other had stubble, police said.

The force has urged people to use well-lit paths at night and carry only essential valuables.

Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting reference number 44150104481.
