VOLUNTEERS at Winchester Hospital Radio have won a national trophy for their coverage of a bus running day in the city.

The charity won silver in the Best Speech Package category at the recent National Hospital Radio Awards.

Its volunteers won for their coverage of the King Alfred bus Running Gala on New Year’s Day.

They recorded interviews on the streets, vintage buses and at Winchester Guildhall, and were hailed by judges for their ambition, storytelling, effects and “variety of voices”.

Anna O’Brien, chairman, said: “It’s nice for all the volunteers, because everybody involved in the charity is a volunteer.

“A number of the team have been patients. They’ve listened as patients and they’ve given something back to the hospital. They’ve got that empathy with the folks who are in the beds.”

Winchester Hospital Radio has provided a ward visit and broadcast service at Royal Hampshire County Hospital for over 30 years.

This year’s win comes after a string of recent shortlist nominations. The broadcast can be heard at www.hbauk.com/news/national-hospital-radio-awards-2015-winners.
