INNOVATIVE loft conversions and the law on party walls were among the topics discussed at a seminar for surveyors, architects and engineers in Hampshire, writes Rachel Masker.

The one-day event was organised by CPD Conferences and sponsored by Local Surveyors Direct, a price comparison website for property services.

Chief executive JJ Heath-Caldwell, who lives in Sutton Scotney, near Winchester, said: “We find expert speakers on different topics to update delegates on key issues. It’s also a chance to network.”

Digby Rowsell, inventor of the Telebeams loft conversion system, kicked-off with a talk on his new lightweight, aluminium, telescopic beams for loft conversions. He showed how they can replace large, heavy steel beams. Benefits include more headroom and ease and speed of installation.

He was followed by Alex Frame, a surveyor and specialist on party walls who explained the relevant law and answered questions from about 40 delegates at the conference on Wednesday April 22 at The Sandford Springs Golf Course in Kingsclere, north of Winchester.

Other speakers included Andrew Haste, of Hastens Consulting Engineers, who talked about structural stability issues when doing building work, such as knocking out walls and Stuart Steel, of Naylor International who focused on drainage solutions.
