THEY are two of Hampshire's cutest new arrivals and thanks to you they now have the perfect names.

A competition to name Marwell Zoo's tiny black and white ruffed lemurs has finished and the winning names are Misangodina and Volana.

The twins are three weeks old and are starting to explore their new home together under the watchful eye of their proud parents.

Born to mum Breeze and dad Mr Breeze, the new babies are an important addition to the European Endangered species breeding Programme.

Black and white ruffed lemurs are Critically Endangered and face a real struggle to avoid extinction in the wild in the coming years.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s 94 per cent of all lemurs are under threat, with more than a fifth of all lemur species classed as "critically endangered".

As well as seeing their habitat in Madagascar destroyed by illegal logging, lemurs are also regularly hunted for their meat.

Claire Mound, team leader of primates and small mammals, said: “The two names suit these very special babies and once translated, they match the fur patterns on each of their heads.

"Volana means moon in Malagasy and the little girl has a small moon shaped white tuft on top of her head. "While Misangodina means swirl and the little boy has a swirl of grey/white on top of his head.”

Claire added: “We feel very proud to be part of such an important breeding programme and to be able to watch these youngsters develop."
