A MUCH-loved television presenter is set for pastures new as he takes up post at the University of Winchester.

Gardening expert, writer and broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh starts as chancellor on Saturday (August 1).

He takes over from Dame Mary Fagan who has retired after nearly 10 years in the role.

Mr Titchmarsh said he is delighted to work with the university.

“I’ve long admired both the university's academic standing and its inclusive ethos and I am hugely looking forward to working closely with the vice-chancellor, to make sure that the university continues to maintain its reputation and goes from strength-to-strength,” he said.

“It will be a challenging role but one that I shall relish.”

He was appointed as a MBE in 2000 for services to horticulture and broadcasting.

In 2001 he became a deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire and is patron to more than 50 charities.

He has also written nine novels, over 50 gardening books, and is the first ambassador and Royal Horticultural Society vice president.

Prof Joy Carter, vice-chancellor of the university, said: “We are all excited to be welcoming Alan Titchmarsh as our new chancellor. He brings with him a wealth of experience and I am sure he will have a positive and significant impact on all aspects of university life. I am very much looking forward to working with him over the coming years.”

She added: “We owe Dame Mary a huge debt for her magnificent service and loyalty to the university. Her last official engagement as chancellor was in April when she presided over an honorary graduation ceremony for former students as part of our 175th anniversary.

“I’m delighted that Dame Mary will be continuing her association with the university as Chancellor Emeritus.”

Mr Titchmarsh will be officially installed as chancellor at an event in October.
