THE annual lecture of the Winchester Excavations Committee takes place on December 3.
The subject will be the city military past which stretches back to Roman times when they built a fort on a ford of the River Itchen in low-lying marshland.
Musket, Fife and Drum; Winchester's Military Past will trace the history through Anglo-Saxon times, the Middle Ages, the 17th century civil war to the present day.
The three speakers are Prof Martin Biddle, director of the Winchester Research Unit, who will speak on Armies in Winchester from Rome to the Cold War.
Paul McCulloch, of Pre-Construct Archaeology will talk on the Hessian Camp, the 7-9,000 German soldiers based in Winchester in 1756-57 during the war with France.
He has been leading archaeologists digging the site before house-building starts at Barton Farm.
Dr Phil Marter, senior lecturer in archaeology, at Winchester University, will discuss the First World War military transit camp at Morn Hill.
The lecture is at Winchester Guildhall at 6pm.
