FILMING of a £100m TV series comtiues in Winchester today - and a Hollywood star has been spotted enjoying a roast dinner in a local pub.

Winchester has been awash with activity as cameras rolled into the city and streets were transformed to look like wartime Britain.

And Hollywood star John Lithgow has been seen on set and having a meal in the Wykeham Arms.

The American veteran plays Winston Churchill in The Crown, a Netflix series costing more than any other in British history.

Telling the Queen's life story, the show feature former Doctor Who star Matt Smith playing Prince Philip and Claire Foy as Elizabeth II.

Today scenes were filmed at The Great Hall, which is currently closed to the public and will also be shut on Tuesday and Wednesday for derigging.

It hasn’t stopped scores of interested onlookers taking pictures of the set to see if they can catch a glimpse of the stars of the show.

On Sunday a bomb crater was seen in the middle of Canon Street, and parts of College Street were shut off for filming. Dotted around the set were historic cars, and extras and actors dressed in 1940s fashion.

Mr Lithgow is well-known for starring in '90s US comedy series 3rd Rock from the Sun. He also had roles in major Hollywood movies including Terms of Endearment, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Cliffhanger, This is 40, Love is Strange and Interstellar.

The 70-year-old was spotted enjoying a roast dinner at the Wykeham Arms in Kingsgate Street.

Businesses in the area praised production crews for making the filming process as smooth as possible.

Manager of Kingsgate Wines and Provisions, Tim Pride, said: “I think it is always a good thing to have a bit of coverage, we were open when the filming took place and it was very busy and we had a few more people coming in.”

“The filming crew were very efficient and very friendly to deal with all the way through.”
